Life as a UF Telecommunications Major

Studying Telecommunications at the University of Florida is one of the best decisions I have made. This school definitely devotes a lot of time and resources to students who desire to be journalists whether it is in television, radio, or even print. This school is one of the top Universities in the country and it also holds one of the most prestigious journalism programs in the country.

One of the many great things about studying Telecommunications at the University of Florida is being able to have various opportunities that help me acquire a career in this field. So far at the University of Florida I have had the opportunity to serve in many different media capabilities.

IMG_4176I have been able to work in the various campus stations that are offered to students ranging from an ESPN radio affiliate and even produce content for the television station.IMG_4173

This station has given me a small glimpse of what working in a professional newsroom looks like. Every day that I have set foot in this newsroom, I have learned something new about this career, and myself. I have acquired many skills, which I believe will make me competitive once I graduate and I begin the search for a career. I am extremely grateful for all of the opportunities that I have been fortunate to experience while at the University of Florida.

The Tipping Point

I think that this book does a great job of explaining how social trends are formed, and the best ways that social trends are spread. The book utilizes great examples that help explain the process of social trends. Through the detailed examples, the audience can create clear and vivid pictures that demonstrate the author’s purpose in writing this book.

I think one of the points that is interesting is the point that the author mentions when he is talking about epidemics. He says that a tiny of the percentage of the people will do majority of the work. I think it is interesting in relation to social trends because sometimes a social trend is sparked by just a small group of people. Usually social trends will start as an idea by a small group of people, and then it quickly spreads to other people. He goes on to say that it is a small handful of people that are exceptional at what they do that helps start the social trends. Some people have strengths in areas that are weaknesses for others, and together they can unite the two and create something special. Together, they can distribute and spread their ideas better because they are using each other and maximizing everyone’s potential.

One of the examples that I think creates the most vivid picture in my head is when the author describes the story of Paul Revere. He brings in so much context and detail into the story that helps me imagine the actual scene when Paul Revere rode into the night warning the people that the British were coming. The author then uses this example consistently to mention other factors about social trends and how they spread. One of the tools that we can gain from the Paul Revere example is how powerful word of mouth is when trying to convey our ideas to other people. This is the most effective way to communicate your ideas with other people, and now with the technology that is available to us today, we are able to spread that information faster and to a much broader audience. We are still communicating to other people our thoughts, our interests, and our similarities and now, we are able to reach millions of people through word of mouth.

Our technology has also had an impact in the way that people become “connectors”. The author explains what it means to be a connector and how reaching people through your friends, and mutual friends also impacts how fast social ideas can spread. He begins to describe all the connections he has made because of his one friend, and I could not help but think about Facebook, and Twitter and how we are able to make the biggest and broadest connections right at our fingertips. With social media, we have the power to reconnect with people who we have forgotten or who no longer live in the same area with us. This allows for our networks to reach beyond the walls of high schools, cities, states, and even different countries.

This book was very enjoyable to read and it definitely opened me up to a new perspective about how social trends are created, and how they are spread to different people.

Brief Bio

Hello everyone,

My name is Jonathan Perez and I am a Telecommunications Major at the University of Florida. While at UF, I am studying to become a sports broadcaster. I love watching sports, and I love telling people about sports. I aspire to be a sports anchor for ESPN or for a local news station. On my free time, I hang out with my friends playing video games, playing pick up basketball, and I enjoy watching super hero movies. On this blog, I have reviewed some of my favorite superhero movies as well as some of the ones that have recently released. I think superhero movies are great because they take people back to their childhood and they make superpowers and superheroes a reality.  I hope you would take the time to read some of them and leave some comments on what you think of the movies.

I look forward to reading your comments!

IRON MAN 2

In the second movie of the three part series, we see what takes place after Tony Stark reveals himself to the world as Iron Man. Other countries have attempted to replicate the Iron Man suit, but have failed in every single attempt. Tony makes the claim that no other country comes close with the technology to make an Iron Man suit, but the audience soon finds out that a Russian engineer has already developed the technology for his own version of an Iron Man suit.

We are introduced to Ivan Vanko, whose father worked with Tony Stark’s father in developing the arc reactor. Vanko believes that Stark has stolen the invention of his father, and he begins this pursuit to try and kill Tony with his new invention.

In this movie, we also begin to see the relationship that Tony had with his father Howard. Tony was not fond of his father because he was always busy with his work and did not commit to his son. Tony later understands that although his father never communicated with him, he did love him. His projects were all built so that Tony could see the importance of his work, and continue impacting the world with the technology that would later be available to Tony.

Although Howard Stark is dead, he still impacts Tony’s life, and in fact helps save his life. The arc reactor that powers the suit and keeps Tony alive is also killing him. It isn’t until he finds an old video of his father, that Tony realizes his dad was looking after him, and discovers the cure to his illness. Tony is able to build a new and stronger arc reactor for his chest which cures him and also gives his suit more power. At the end of the film, Nick Furry and Tony Stark are in a meeting talking about the Avengers Initiative, the plan to bring a team of heroes together to help fight off super villains of the world and of the galaxy.

IRON MAN

One of the smartest superheroes in the Marvel Universe is billionaire weapon manufacturer Tony Stark. In this first movie of the Iron Man series, we are taken into the life of Tony and how he became Iron Man. This movie does a great job revealing the character transformation that happens within Tony Stark. He realizes that he does not want to make weapons any more that harm people, but rather he wants to become the hero that protects people from powerful weapons.

It is actually quite interesting as to how Tony Stark becomes Iron Man. While showcasing one of his newest and dangerous missiles to the United States military, the whole camp gets ambushed by terrorist groups who are in possession of Stark’s weapons. In fact, Tony later finds out that the terrorist group is in possession of his weapons because they are his biggest customers. During the attack, Tony gets a direct hit to one of his weapons, which damages his heart. A scientist performs surgery in a dark cave integrating an electro magnet into his chest, which is the only way Tony can survive because it prevents the metal from entering his heart.

The genius engineer develops a iron suit that runs on the power of his new heart and it allows him to escape from the terrorist group. We then see Tony want to start taking responsibility for his actions and really strive to make a change in the world with his inventions. This movie does a great job of capturing the audience with all of the special effects and the cool technology that Tony Stark has in his fingertips. He integrates a suit of armor fully equipped with his best weapons, and he goes on missions to destroy the weapons that are in the hands of the terrorist group. Iron Man is an interesting superhero because he doesn’t have any actual superhuman powers or abilities. Although he is a genius when it comes to technology, that is not quite superhuman like any of the other superheroes. In fact he is quite similar to Bruce Wayne and Batman. Both are billionaires because of their business, and they both become superheroes protecting the innocent with out any powers. This trait from both Batman and Iron Man give fans the concept that even normal people without powers can still make a difference in the world and still be a hero.

X MEN THE LAST STAND

In the third part of the series X MEN, the audience is finally engaged with the movie emotionally. In the previous movies, I believe it lacked emotion involving the characters and the plot. However, with this movie, the audience as finally developed a connection with each of the characters, which as a result, delivers a stronger emotional impact.

Magneto and Professor X still value their old friendship, despite their differences on how mutants should live on Earth. In this film, Magneto leads his charge of mutants (The Brotherhood) to finally take a stand for their place in society, while Professor X counters his efforts with his X Men. Magneto manipulates and recruits other mutants to fight against the humans because they have developed a cure for their mutation. Meanwhile Charles Xavier devotes himself to protect the humans and fight off Magneto. This film finally introduces us to Jean Grey’s alternate personality “The Phoenix”. In the previous X Men movie, we are left with the concept that Jean sacrificed her life to allow the X Men to escape. During this scene, we quickly see “The Phoenix” emerge, but it isn’t until this film that her personality and character are revealed.

The Phoenix turns Jean into one of the most powerful mutants ever in the Marvel Universe, and unfortunately the beloved Jean Grey is never able to return to her normal state and is gone forever. A powerful and emotional scene in the movie is when Professor X attempts to save Jean from the Phoenix with his mutant abilities, but The Phoenix is too powerful for him, and he fails. When The Phoenix kills Charles Xavier (who is the second X Men she has killed in the movie) the audience sees the transition that has taken place. The Jean Grey that fans loved, has been consumed by the by the powerful force of the Phoenix and is extremely dangerous.  Magneto, devastated after watching his good friend die, then takes Jean to lead the rebellion because he knows that with her by his side, no one will overtake them.

I think this movie does a great job of showing progress of the characters from the previous movies as well. We see the growth the X Men students with their abilities and we also see their personalities strengthen. When Professor X dies, the toughest X Men, Wolverine, drops to the floor and begins to cry. This scene clearly depicts the transition and the strength of the relationship between the two that was not apparent in the first or second film.

Finally, this movie leaves us with the hope that although Professor X is not with the X Men, his teachings and his ideologies will continue to live on through the school and the X Men. The audience can leave with the sense that the X Men are ready to help the people of this world as they have mastered how to control their abilities and do not live in fear of what the world thinks of them.

X MEN ORIGINS FIRST CLASS

This is another movie made after the first three movies in the X Men series that takes us back to the start of X Men. This movie shows us the very first X men group formed with the help of a very young Charles Xavier, Eric Lensherr. The movie takes us into the Cuban Missile Crisis, and how a mutant, Shaw, was the mastermind behind the operation almost starting another world war.

This movie does a great job building characters who have a future role in the X Men series movies. We are taken into the relationship of Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr, the founders of X Men and how their relationship develops. Charles and Eric form a very strong friendship, but they clash on their views of where mutants stand in society and what they should do with their powers. Other characters that are important are Beast and Mystique. These two characters become prominent characters in the X Men series, and from this movie, we see how their personality changes and who they hold their allegiance to. Mystique and Charles share a special friendship with one another, but Mystique later becomes captivated by Eric and how he sees her as a mutant. She sides with Eric, while Beast supports Charles and what he stands for.

I think this movie appealed to the fans because in the prior X Men movies, Charles and Eric are old men in their 60s, and in this movie we see their friendship when they are in the 20s. We see the progression of the two and we are entered into their friendship, something that was very prevalent in the previous movies. This movie also shows Charles’ passion to help students learn and master their abilities. This is the image that is fortified in the fans’ minds as a teacher and the founder of the Xavier Institute. The ending of this film transitions well into how we view the X men today. Charles accepts his new identity as Professor X to lead and teach mutants about their powers, while Eric transforms himself into the powerful villain Magneto.

I think this trailer is great for this movie, because it really takes us back in time to the beginning of the friendship between Eric and Charles. It shows glimpses of the past and future, and the audience can really see the development of these two characters and how they will always be a force in each other’s life.
